HTC One X for AT&T benchmarked: impressive, most impressive

The One X is not officially here... yet. That hasn't stopped someone from putting the new superphone through the benchmarking wringer, however. Turns out, that dual-core Snapdragon S4 SoC may be all it's cracked up to be, as screencaps have popped up online showing scores that blow away damn near every mobile device under the sun. Apparently, an AT&T employee put the One X through its paces, and if the scores are to be believed, it smoked the Galaxy Nexus in Quadrant and handily outperformed even the quad-core Transformer Prime in Vellamo. So, it seems that Peter Chou's new favorite phone has the guts to match its handsome exterior, but don't take our word for it, see for yourself at the source below.

'Hunger Games': Five Best Scenes Not In The Movie

We recognize the big-screen adaptation's time constraints, but we missed these moments from the book.

Translating a novel into a Hollywood blockbuster is not an easy task. Since there is limited time, a lot of the juicy tidbits get lost in translation. With a book as popular as "The Hunger Games," fan criticism lurks at every turn and the screenwriters are careful to include as many of the beloved scenes as possible.

Luckily, the adaptation of the book to the big screen left this weekend's moviegoers extremely pleased. While we are understanding of the time constraints — the movie is already over two hours — there were a few key "Hunger Games" book scenes we would have loved to see in the film.

For those of you who have yet to read the book, there are spoilers ahead. (Also, what are you waiting for?! If you enjoyed the movie, the book will fill in all the missing details.) From Haymitch's drunken fall to District 11's respect for Katniss to Katniss' fight to get back to Peeta, here are our picks for the five key scenes from the book not in the movie:

Haymitch Falling Offstage at the Reaping
From the start of the Reaping scene with Prim stopped dead in her tracks to the end when Katniss is escorted to her holding room, the audience is left shaking in their seats. Katniss volunteering in place of Prim saw quite a few audience members already in tears too. In the novel, before Effie begins her infamous "Happy Hunger Games!" speech, there is a quick scene where Haymitch is so drunk he falls off the stage. It adds a little comic relief to his introduction, but it also sets up the mentor's troubled state and shows the effect the Games had on him years later as a grown man.

Peeta's Father Bringing Katniss Cookies
In the book, before Katniss and Peeta board the train for the Capitol, Katniss gets a surprise visitor: Peeta's dad, the District 12 baker, brings her a plate of cookies and informs her that he'll make sure Prim is eating. It's a touching gesture that confuses Katniss at first. She is familiar with Mr. Mellark because he buys the squirrels she hunts in the woods, but he has no obligation to her or her family. Katniss comes to believe it is because everyone merely tolerates her but they cannot help but love innocent, friendly Prim. The scene sets the audience up for Katniss' distrust of Peeta throughout the book.

District 11 Sending Katniss Bread
The District 11 uprising after Rue's death in the movie adaptation is absent from the novel. In lieu of this scene, Katniss is sent a sponsor gift containing a loaf of bread. During their training before the Games, Peeta explained to Katniss the different types of bread in each district, and Katniss immediately recognizes the loaf as coming from District 11. In recognition of the gift, she says a thank you to the district out loud. While the movie scene shows the power Katniss already possesses against the Capitol, the book scene slowly sets up the other districts' willingness to trust her.

Katniss Telling Peeta the Story of Prim's Goat
While Katniss attempts to nurse Peeta back to health — to no avail, as his leg gets worse — a feverish Peeta asks her to tell him a story. Knowing that the Capitol and Gamemakers are listening to every word, she leaves out the details of her and Gale hunting in the woods and tells him the story of how she bought Prim's goat, Lady. After selling a young buck at the Hob, Katniss has enough money to buy Prim a nice birthday present. She passes on a hairbrush and cloth for a dress in favor of an injured goat. Prim loves animals, and with her mother's help, they were able to nurse Lady back to health. The milk from the goat helped the Everdeens survive after their father's death. Katniss' ability to open up to Peeta adds to the love-triangle dynamic. The more Katniss reveals about herself to Peeta, the more she starts to care for him and vice versa, whereas Gale was around to experience these moments with her.

One of the more powerful scenes in the book comes when Katniss and Peeta are airlifted out of the arena and onto a hover craft. Katniss sees Peeta being taken away, but at the time, she is unaware of the reason. As they are separated, Katniss begins pounding on a glass door while screaming Peeta's name. While the audience is left to wonder whether Katniss is really in love with Peeta, this scene shows that, regardless of whether it was all an act, she cares about him. Later on, this scene is replayed in front of the Capitol during an interview with Caesar Flickerman and shows that the star-crossed-lovers act just might save her life — at least for now.

Penn study reveals safety of CT scans for rapid rule out of heart attacks in ER chest pain patients

PHILADELPHIA A highly detailed CT scan of the heart can safely and quickly rule out the possibility of a heart attack among many patients who come to hospital emergency rooms with chest pain, according to the results of a study that will be presented by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania today at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session and published concurrently in the New England Journal of Medicine. The multicenter randomized trial comparing coronary CT angiography (CCTA) and traditional cardiac testing methods revealed that chest pain patients with negative CT scans can be discharged safely from the hospital within hours. The findings may offer a new strategy for relieving the emergency room crowding that plagues many of America's hospitals, and could help to trim millions of dollars off the costs of care for one of the leading causes of ER visits.

Chest pain is the second most common reason people go the emergency room in the United States, accounting for as many as 8 million visits each year at a cost of several billion dollars. Just 5 to 15 percent of those patients are ultimately found to be suffering from heart attacks or other serious cardiac diseases, since issues from pneumonia to indigestion to anxiety can cause the same types of symptoms. But more than half of chest pain patients are admitted to the hospital for observation or traditional evaluation such as cardiac catheterization or a stress test.

"Until now, our methods for diagnosing patients with acute coronary syndromes in the emergency room setting have been both time-consuming and costly. We have spent the past 30 years trying to find a simple test that will tell patients, right now, 'It's not your heart.' This trial is the first time we've been able to accomplish that," said senior author Judd Hollander, MD, clinical research director in the department of Emergency Medicine and the senior author of the study.

The authors studied 1,370 patients at five medical centers who were classified as low-to-intermediate risk for heart attack, meaning they had no previously identified heart disease and did not have cardiac risk factors such as diabetes or high blood pressure. They randomized patients to one of two arms: those who received a CCTA scan and those who received conventional care strategies to rule out serious blockages of the arteries supplying the heart. Of 640 patients whose CCTA was negative, revealing no clinically important coronary artery blockages, none died or suffered a heart attack within 30 days. The investigators also found that patients in the CCTA arm were more than twice as likely to be discharged directly from the emergency department to their homes (50 percent) than those who underwent traditional care (23 percent). Patients in the CCTA arm also spent significantly less time in the hospital (a median of 18 hours), compared to those in the traditional care group (25 hours). Those with negative tests had an even greater difference in the length of their hospital stay (12 vs. 25 hours). Additionally, CCTA proved to be more effective at identifying patients with coronary artery disease compared to stress testing (9 percent of patients had a positive test versus 3.5 percent).

"CT scanning has long been used in emergency departments to learn the cause of other symptoms like abdominal pain and shortness of breath. It's available in many hospitals around the clock, so now we can answer important questions about chest pain right away and send patients home much more quickly," said lead author Harold Litt, MD, PhD, chief of Cardiovascular Imaging in the department of Radiology. "This test allows us to get a very good look at the coronary arteries in a noninvasive way, and for the large majority of people who are shown to not have a narrowing of the arteries, it's an excellent alternative to cardiac catheterization."

CCTA generates three-dimensional images of the heart and the blood vessels surrounding it. The tests, which are conducted like a standard CT scan, cost about $1,500 and allow patients who have a negative scan to be discharged from the hospital within hours, while costs for those admitted to the hospital for stress testing and monitoring typically total more than $4,000 for each patient.

The trial was funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) Foundation. Trial sites included the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Penn State University Medical Center at Hershey, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Of 640 patients whose CCTA was negative, revealing no clinically important coronary artery blockages, none died or suffered a heart attack within 30 days. The investigators also found that patients in the CCTA arm were more than twice as likely to be discharged directly from the emergency department to their homes (50 percent) than those who underwent traditional care (23 percent). Patients in the CCTA arm also spent significantly less time in the hospital (a median of 18 hours), compared to those in the traditional care group (25 hours). Those with negative tests had an even greater difference in the length of their hospital stay (12 vs. 25 hours). Additionally, CCTA proved to be more effective at identifying patients with coronary artery disease compared to stress testing (9 percent of patients had a positive test versus 3.5 percent).

"CT scanning has long been used in emergency departments to learn the cause of other symptoms like abdominal pain and shortness of breath. It's available in many hospitals around the clock, so now we can answer important questions about chest pain right away and send patients home much more quickly," said lead author Harold Litt, MD, PhD, chief of Cardiovascular Imaging in the department of Radiology. "This test allows us to get a very good look at the coronary arteries in a noninvasive way, and for the large majority of people who are shown to not have a narrowing of the arteries, it's an excellent alternative to cardiac catheterization."

CCTA generates three-dimensional images of the heart and the blood vessels surrounding it. The tests, which are conducted like a standard CT scan, cost about $1,500 and allow patients who have a negative scan to be discharged from the hospital within hours, while costs for those admitted to the hospital for stress testing and monitoring typically total more than $4,000 for each patient.

The trial was funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) Foundation. Trial sites included the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Penn State University Medical Center at Hershey, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Romney rivals draw on "Etch A Sketch" line, toy sales soar

(Reuters) - Mitt Romney's presidential hopes may have been shaken up when an aide compared his campaign to an "Etch A Sketch" toy, but the publicity blitz has been a delightful surprise for the U.S. makers of the well-known erasable children's art tablet.

Ohio Art, the low-key, family-run company that has made "Etch A Sketch" for half a century, saw its sales of the toy soar to 1,556 on Amazon.com within 24 hours of the gaffe. The company's thinly traded stock more than doubled, to $9.65.

Senior Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom was speaking about what would happen if Romney won the Republican nomination and faced President Barack Obama in the November election when he drew what has become an unfortunate comparison for Romney.

"You hit a reset button for the fall campaign," Fehrnstrom told a CNN interviewer on Wednesday. "Everything changes. It's almost like an 'Etch A Sketch'. You can kind of shake it up, and we start all over again."

Romney's rivals - Republicans and Democrats alike - seized on the comment as proof the Republican frontrunner was a flip-flopping waffler whose positions on issues such as healthcare were not to be trusted.

His Republican opponents gleefully waved the $12.99 red plastic toy, which lets children make drawings they can then erase by shaking it.

"I am not the 'Etch A Sketch' candidate!" Romney challenger Rick Santorum declared to supporters.

"Etch A Sketch" mania has erupted online, the toy triggering a reaction normally reserved for the likes of the Kardashians.

It elbowed out NFL star Tim Tebow on Yahoo's Top 5 searches and swept Twitter's top slot for two days running.

On television, "Etch A Sketches" took over cable newsrooms. "I wish we could erase the U.S. debt," one commentator wisecracked as he fumbled with the plastic knobs.

For Ohio Art, the attention has been manna from toy heaven.

"It's kind of like a Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky amount of media interest," says Bill Southard, who has been doing Etch A Sketch's promotions for the past 18 years.

"This is the kind of publicity flurry you usually only see in a crisis or a product malfunction."

Ohio Art President Larry Killgallon was sitting in a meeting in the Chicago office of Bruce Lund, the inventor of last year's hit toy, "Doggie Doo", on Wednesday.

Suddenly, Killgallon noticed his iPad, which he covers in an "Etch A Sketch" case, was being blitzed with emails, and his similarly clad iPhone started ringing.

"I've never seen anything like this," said Killgallon, dazed from a 24-hour publicity blitz. "Our target audience is four-to-eight year olds."

Larry runs Ohio Art with his brother, Bill, and his son, marketing head Martin.

The first "Etch A Sketch" rolled off Ohio Art's production line on July 12, 1960, back when Larry and Bill's dad was helping run the place.

By the 1990s, production had moved to China and "Etch A Sketch" remains Ohio Art's number-one selling toy.

In between interviews, they decided to send each candidate a box of etch a sketches, but the Obama administration missed out.

Larry Killgoran describes the clan as right-leaning but free-thinking.

"It's like the 'Etch A Sketch'. There's both a left and a right knob and if they work together they can draw a circle," Killgoran says of the U.S. political situation.
