Google Field Trip serves as a tour guide on your mobile phone

19 hrs.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.

After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.

When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.

The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?

NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

Black Hawk Helicopter Trivia

Do you ever get asked to play Trivia? There are always questions that are asked and you respond ?I didn?t know that!?. This article is about the Black Hawk Helicopter and some basic trivia for all of us to know.

This sleek machine is a four blade, twin engine aircraft manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. It has two T700 GE engines on it and costs between 5 and 21 million dollars. At this price not everyone will be able to purchase more than one. The Black Hawk was chosen by the US Army over the Boeing Vertol YUH-61 and entered service in 1979. However the first flight was on Nov. 29, 1974. There were a total of 4000 units built. There are 4 versions of the helicopter, including a VIP version (VH-60N) that is used for government officials. This includes ?Marine One? on which the President travels.

In 1987 the engines were upgraded to the T700 GE engines and the external lift capacity increased from 8000 lbs to 9000 lbs. This modified version (UH-60) was used in the Osama bin Laden mission in 2011. This version also included a modified tail section with extra blades on the tail rotor along with other modifications to reduce noise. There was also technology that was used to allow it to avoid the Pakistan Air Force radars.

A UH-60 Black Hawk can carry up to 11 troops and their equipment. It can carry 10,000 lbs of rockets, missiles or gun pods.

The Black Hawk is not only owned by the United States of America. There are several other countries that have acquired these powerful aircraft. Colombia uses their UH-60?s to combat drug and guerrilla organizations. Mexico uses their units for drug trafficking. The Republic of China purchased the UH-60?s for search and rescue missions. Turkey and United Arab Emirates also procured their units through a Foreign Military Sale.

As you can see there is a lot of interesting Trivia to learn about the Black Hawk Helicopter. The fun part of this is that you can own and fly one if you desire. Through the vast world of RC Helicopters you too can fly this big bird. In summary here are a few facts that you might want to keep in mind just in case your asked that question:

Crew: 2 pilots, Length: 64 feet 10 inches, Rotor diameter: 53 feet 8 inches, Height: 16 feet 10 inches, Empty weight: 10,624 lbs, Loaded weight: 22,000 lbs, Never exceed speed: 193 knots (222 mph, 357 km/h), Cruise speed: 150 kt (173 mph, 278 km/h).

Now you can say ?I know that!? Enjoy.

Make More Money With These Great Affiliate Promotion Tips ...

There is little cost involved in starting an online marketing campaign; therefore, it is very attractive to small businesses. You don?t have to actually purchase the product, pay to ship it to the customers, or even touch any of it yourself! However, internet marketing has nuances that sometimes require careful attention.

You should promote services or items in which you are confident. Providing good recommendations helps promote confidence in your business because people see you as knowledgeable. Trust and goodwill is built between you and your customers with the kinds of products you associate yourself with. If you want to keep good customers, you have to promote excellent, fairly priced products.

TIP! Google will rank your site higher if you have relevant social media content. This is a very important part of affiliate marketing, making it important you pay close attention to the latest trends.

It is important for affiliate marketers to portray themselves as a high-quality business. When adding a link, be sure that it is subtle. If you do this well, your visitors will understand affiliate products to be just another part of your offerings.

If you have lead ads, maybe create a mystery question and have the consumer visit your web page to get the question?s answer. You will have people who will just have to click through on that banner advertisement to find the answer. You can offer an incentive to people who had the correct answer.

Good affiliate marketers are honest about their business engagements. Inform your readers about affiliate programs you promote, especially if you are writing articles, reviews or blog entries that include your affiliate links. If visitors sense dishonesty about your affiliations with the retailer of the product they wish to purchase, they will just pass you up and purchase directly from the merchant.

100% Commission

Keep in mind that there are 100% commission programs and that not all are scams. Before you completely ignore this opportunity, read the details. Several businesses that propose 100% commission, do it so that they compensate you solely according to the straightforward sale and then retain the subscription income for themselves. These programs can still be profitable for you, so review them carefully when you encounter offers like this.

Write a handwritten advertisement, scan it and publish it on your website. Make your website your own and make it personal, this can drive traffic and boost profits. If you have poor penmanship, hire a freelancer to compose the advertisement.

TIP! Making more money using affiliate marketing could be done by using screenshots or videos with your reviews to make your product stand out. These reviews will draw more customers to your product line.

Not all affiliate websites are created equal. You will run into some difficulties when sites are not well written or easy to navigate. A poorly designed site should not off-put an affiliate from making a profit. This practice will build a trust bond with their visitors and this could lead to extra sales.

When you pick affiliates, know your audience. You should pick affiliates that offer complementary products. Visitors to your site know what they want already, so don?t try to sway them with unrelated products. Use marketing that will guide visitors to your site for things they need.

Affiliate marketers should understand that those pay-per-sale marketing plans are very risky. If it works it can mean a lot of extra income for you! Be sure to thoroughly research an affiliate before deciding on it. This way you will know whether or not it is right for you.

TIP! If you have been part of a program for a while and are pulling decent returns from it, ask for more. The affiliate marketing program will want to keep you aboard if you generate a lot of sales and would be more inclined to give you a pay raise.

Get yourself an accountant. You may not need to hire anyone if you opt for a computer program that works as a virtual accountant. Having some sort of accounting method helps keep track of what money is coming in and how much you are spending. Set up the accounting software or make arrangements with an accountant prior to beginning your programs, so that you are prepared from the get-go.

You need to do things especially for your audience, especially if they are older. By making your font size larger by even a point or two, you can increase your sales opportunities. If customers can read about your product, they are more likely to purchase it.

Get your reader?s trust. If your readers actually like you and your content, they will support you by seeking out your referral links and clicking them if they are planning on buying the product anyway.

TIP! You must let your readers know who you are dealing with when it comes to affiliate marketing. Be honest to help build a loyal audience.

Keeping up on current market trends is vital to success. If keeping abreast of your competitors is a constant struggle and you feel you are falling behind, it only stands to reason that your competitors may experience more success than you do.

Tracking System

A few less than reputable vendors may try to talk you into using their tracking system for self-serving purposes. You can avoid this mess altogether by using a reputable tracking system.

TIP! Pick a affiliate that boasts a high sales volume, you will make more money. Use a 1% conversion rate for your benchmark.

The goals that you have should always go beyond just having a sustainable income. Working hard consistently will lead you to ever-increasing profits. At times you may want to give up, but if you put in your time and work hard, you will see it all pay

NY animal hospice Oprah praised shuts amid lawsuit

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? An animal hospice once praised by Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities is shutting down as its owner faces a lawsuit from the state attorney general charging her with failing to file financial reports.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Wednesday that the Angel's Gate hospice, located 60 miles southwest of Albany in rural Delhi, has taken in hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from the public without publicly accounting for any of it, and he's seeking its dissolution.

The latest tax return filed by Angel's Gate chief executive Susan Marino is for 2008 and was filed on April 31. It shows Angel's Gate received nearly $1.2 million in donations between 2003 and 2006.

Marino, who ran the hospice for hundreds of chronically ill and crippled dogs and cats, also faces cruelty charges stemming from a 2010 undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She said Wednesday she's finding new homes for 180 cats and "a handful" of dogs remaining at the hospice.

"We're going to dissolve Angel's Gate," Marino said by telephone. "These past two years have been hell."

She said she's had "nothing but hate mail and death threats" since PETA posted online a video showing animals with deformed limbs, oozing sores and other ailments it alleged were left untreated by her.

"We have an auditor who has been working with our bookkeeper to get our records up to date," Marino said. "We're late in filing, but there's been no misappropriation of funds. Every penny went for the animals' care."

Donations poured in after Marino and Angel's Gate were featured on Winfrey's Chicago-based syndicated television show in 2008. In 2009, Angel's Gate won $50,000 in a competition sponsored by Rachael Ray's pet rescue organization. Marino also had an appearance on Martha Stewart's show and was awarded an ASPCA Founders award and a Woman of Distinction honor from New York state.

But critics accuse her of being an animal hoarder and shameless self-promoter who puts on a good face for the media while animals suffer behind closed doors. PETA's undercover investigation found paralyzed dogs dragging themselves around until they had bloody skin ulcers, animals with urine scald from chronically wet diapers and animals with respiratory infections denied veterinary care.

Marino said the PETA video was edited in places to give a misleading impression, and she denied any animals were neglected.

But Kim Serino, who worked as a volunteer for Marino before Angel's Gate relocated from Long Island, just east of New York City, to Delhi in 2008, disputed Marino's assertion that the money she took in all went for animal care. She said there was inadequate veterinary care and conditions often were chaotic and filthy. On Wednesday she criticized Marino for hastily finding new homes for the animals.

"The urgency to remove the animals is Susan's choice; it's not a good choice," Serino said.

She said the animals should first be evaluated for temperament to ensure that they go to appropriate homes capable of meeting their needs.

Marino is due to appear in Delaware County Court to answer the attorney general's charges on Monday. The criminal case charging her with 22 counts of cruelty to animals has been adjourned until Oct. 30.

Keeping baby safe on the plane need not be expensive

By Kara Reinhardt, Cheapism.com

Graco

The Graco FastAction Fold Travel System combines a stroller and an infant car seat for around $200 -- and it's the lightest on this list.

Ironic, isn?t it, that a 10-pound bundle of joy requires about the same size bag as a 200-pound business traveler -- not to mention a stroller and a baby seat? Travel systems aim to consolidate some of that bulk by combining everything into a single buggy. This option also promises some savings over purchasing the components separately, a boon for parents when the government pegs the cost of raising a child to the age of 18 near $300,000 for a middle-income family. Safe, high-quality travel systems start at well under $300.

Below are Cheapism?s top picks for affordable travel systems.

  • The Graco FastAction Fold Travel System (starting at $200) comprises a stroller, an infant car seat that can accommodate a child up to 30 pounds (a slightly cheaper 22-pound version is available as well), and a base for securing the seat in a car. On-the-go parents who have posted reviews of this travel system online appreciate that the stroller folds up easily with one hand. It?s also the lightest on this list: The car seat weighs 7.5 pounds and the stroller 22. (Where to buy)
  • The Chicco Cortina Travel System (starting at $270) is also available in two different versions that carry children who weigh up to 22 or 30 pounds, although the larger one generally tops $300. The car seat earns an above-average rating for ease of use from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In reviews, parents agree that the seat is simple to install and also admire this travel system?s quality, sturdiness, and styling. (Where to buy)
  • The Graco Stylus LX Travel System (starting at $244) is the heftiest among these picks, but reviewers say it handles well and, like the other Graco model, requires only one hand to fold up. Reviewers like the cushy fabric on the car seat, which has a 30-pound capacity, and report that the stroller appears to provides a comfortable ride. (Where to buy)

Parents can continue to use these travel systems even after their children outgrow the included infant car seats. The strollers themselves carry toddlers up to 50 pounds. They feature seats that fully recline and conveniences such as cup holders for both parent and child.

All the travel systems on the list above include important car seat safety features, including a five-point harness that secures small passengers over the shoulders, around the hips, and between the legs. The seats are designed to lock into place in a car using the LATCH system, which is required in vehicles manufactured within the past decade. (The acronym stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children.) The NHTSA warns that a car seat must be installed properly in order to protect a child effectively. All the car seats on these travel systems meet government safety standards and rate at least average when it comes to ease of use. Be sure to check the NHTSA website before you buy for complete ratings and up-to-date information about product recalls.

Gut bacteria could could play key role in development of type 2 diabetes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes world-wide has risen rapidly in recent years, and scientists estimate that just as many people could be suffering from the illness without realising it. New research now indicates that your gut bacteria can reveal whether you suffer from the disease.

"We have demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a high level of pathogens in their intestines," says professor Jun Wang from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.

Important intestinal bacteria

The 1.5 kilograms of bacteria that we each carry in our intestines have an enormous impact on our health and well being. The bacteria normally live in a sensitive equilibrium but if this equilibrium is disrupted our health could suffer. In the new study, scientists examined the intestinal bacteria of 345 people from China, of which 171 had type 2 diabetes. The team managed to identify clear biological indicators that someday could be used in methods that provide faster and earlier diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

The research, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature, also demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a more hostile bacterial environment in their intestines, which can increase resistance to different medicines.

Similar studies carried out on sufferers of type 2 diabetes in Denmark also discovered a significant imbalance in the function of their intestinal bacteria and composition. Future Danish studies will examine whether intestinal bacteria is already abnormal in people that are deemed to be at risk of developing diabetes.

"We are going to transplant gut bacteria from people that suffer from type 2 diabetes into mice and examine whether the mice then develop diabetes," says another of the lead scientists behind the project, professor Oluf Borbye Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen and centre director at LuCamp, the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for Applied Medical Genomics in Personalised Disease Prediction, Prevention and Care.

International research team investigates gut bacteria

By working together, a team scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) was able to make to several breakthroughs in the field of 'metagenomics'.

Scientists working on the EU research project MetaHIT have uncovered more than 3.3 million genes from gut bacteria found in people from Spain and Denmark. These genes could play a key role in understanding and treating a range of serious illnesses. According to Professor Karsten Kristiansen from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology, the recent discovery is an important step in the comprehensive international research that is currently underway to investigate the interplay between intestinal bacteria and health.

"The European and Chinese working on the MetaHIT project were able to make important new discoveries about the relationship between intestinal bacteria and health. The new discovery indicates a possible connection between type 2 diabetes and the intestinal bacteria in Chinese people," Kristiansen says.

"It is important to point out that our discovery demonstrates a correlation. The big question now is whether the changes in gut bacteria can affect the development of type 2 diabetes or whether the changes simply reflect that the person is suffering from type 2 diabetes."

Battle Between Engagement & Automation in Human Resources ...

?

The Future of Human Resources Technologies

There is a war happening at your offices every single day. ?Not a physical war in a sense but one that is lurking behind the scenes. ?As a human resources professional, recruiter, or corporate leader you are conflicted. ?On one hand, you believe that messages need to be delivered efficiently, effectively, and provide the organization with a competitive advantage. While on the other, hand you fight with transparency, authenticity, and separating your work life and personal life. ?Sometime it is just too much. ?The technologies in human resources are just too much.

Understanding the Benefits & Perils of Workplace Automation

For many corporate professionals who happen to be voluntarily or involuntarily thrown into the job market, they see these automated interactions and the business engagement struggle every day. ?On one hand, we understand the need for pre-employment testing and workplace automation. ? While on the other, we want nothing more than to talk to a real human being unscripted, real, and human. ?Not just a LinkedIn InMail from a recruiter but a real, live, and personalized conversation. ?Just something, a nugget of insights, engagement, and compassion that isn?t a canned or planned message. ?Those canned messages are just fodder for the disengaged employees.

Most Americans realize that Presidential candidates do not write their own speeches. ?That is in fact what speech writers are for, and that most CEO?s don?t read their own email. ?The communications are analyzed, prepared, and a strategy is in play. ?Corporate communication memos are drafted by PR and then prepared and sent by the corporate admin. ?Business leaders believe that we must work efficiently and strategically. ?Not that these messages don?t matter, we just don?t have the time. ?So we automate the process or reassign said duties to someone else pretending it?s our thoughts and our voice.

I think we are struggling between automation using hiring?algorithms, applicant tracking sytsems and the personal and human touch that we desire as consumers, employees, and candidates. ?It?s the battle between workplace automation and engagement. ?And it is happening squarely in HR technology. ?These systems, softwares, and programs are designed to be efficient to drive productivity and putting our corporate minds at ease. ?Except that you can?t fake engagement. ?Sooner or later your audience gets wise and demands authenticity and individualism in the marketplace.

Employee Involvement Not Just Employee Engagement

I believe we?re at a cross roads in this industry. ?Technologies in human resources and human capital management are and will remain an important part of our jobs forever. ?Except that in my mind engagement is what drives innovation, excitement, and passion. ?Companies that get this right are going to have a huge advantage recruiting, training, retaining, and selling to employees, consumers, and candidates. ?It?s about employee involvement not just employee engagement. ?That is no longer enough.

Certainly, mobile will continue to be important as our audiences are always on the go. ?Companies will need to move to mobile websites and focus on providing great information and content to continue to build relationshiops with their employees and job seekers. ?An HR technology company that develops a tool and software to accomplish this task will be celebrated and rewarded whether it?s recruiting-focused or employee-focused. ?Internal communication will continue to be important as companies look to develop internal social networks in addition to going where their employees and families are. Different channels work for different individuals but companies need to remember that the majority of the workforce is now millenials not boomers who are most of the decision makers. ?Companies who adapt and realize this will be ahead of the game in some many ways.

Creating a conversation that is meaningful and gives the job seekers or employee the insights, information, and help that they want while also balancing the ?sell me? side of employment brand. ?Your social network is more than a jobs feed or blog content stream. ?A simple about page or white paper download is not enough. ?Its a conversation so engage your audience whoever they are, and do it in a meaninginful way. ?Focus on your disengaged workforce and employees. ?Find the balance between engagement and workplace automation. ?That?s the future in the human resources, recruiter, and human capital industries.

Google reportedly didn't expect Apple to ditch their maps so soon, still months away from releasing new app

Apple has a year left on their most recent Google Maps agreement, apparently, and didn't expect Apple to remove them from iOS 6 and launch a new app anywhere near this soon. Meaning, Google was caught flat-footed and won't be ready to ship a standalone Google Maps app for the App Store for several more months. This according to a quartet of stories published today.

Kevin Krolicki of Reuters scored a quote from Google Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt:

"We think it would have been better if they had kept [our maps]. But what do I know?" Schmidt told a small group of reporters in Tokyo. "What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

Schmidt also said Android was kicking the iPhone's butt, yet doesn't enjoy the same kind of media attention obsessively lavished on Apple. So there.

Bloomberg also got a quote from Schmidt at the same Tokyo Nexus event:

?We haven?t done anything yet with Google Maps,? Schmidt told reporters in Tokyo today. Apple would ?have to approve it. It?s their choice,? Schmidt said, declining to say if the Mountain View, California-based company submitted an application to Apple for sale through its App Store.

Chris Ziegler of The Verge, meanwhile, says Google was caught off-guard by Apple's timing:

Apple's decision to ship its own mapping system in the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 was made over a year before the company's agreement to use Google Maps expired, according to two independent sources familiar with the matter. The decision, made sometime before Apple's WWDC event in June, sent Google scrambling to develop an iOS Google Maps app ? an app which both sources say is still incomplete and currently not scheduled to ship for several months.

And Nick Wingfield and Claire Cain Miller of the New York Times says making the standalone Google Maps app will be complicated, firstly because they already have a Google Earth app and will need to figure out if they're going to consolidate it into maps, but also...

Google?s contract with Apple to keep the maps app on the iPhone had more time remaining, and Google did not know that Apple had changed its mind until Apple said publicly in June that it would replace the app with its new maps app, according to two people briefed on the decision.

Though, frankly, if Google only figured out Apple was rolling their own mapping solution when it was announced at WWDC, they're clearly reading the wrong blogs... The moment Apple bought its first mapping company, PlaceBase back in July of 2009 alarm bells should have been going off for Google -- giant, neon alarm bells -- and they should have immediately begun a skunkworks project to have a standalone iOS app ready and waiting for just such a turn of events. Seriously, it's like watching someone wind up a punch with cartoon-like exaggeration and not even preparing to counterpunch until knuckle starts denting jaw.

In any case, iOS 6 users will have to keep offering corrections to Apple's database, and those desperate to get Google Maps back onto their iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads will likely be stuck using maps.google.com for the next few months still, and that's unfortunate.

Bill Murray and Angela Lansbury Check Into Grand Budapest Hotel

bill-murray-angela-lansbury-grand-budapest-hotel-slice

Writer/director Wes Anderson?s wonderfully entertaining Moonrise Kingdom remains one of the best films of 2012, and now the aesthetically inclined filmmaker is already gearing up to start shooting his next feature.? We learned in July that he was courting some big names for his new film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and recently it was confirmed that Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Edward Norton, and Owen Wilson would definitely be joining the cast.? Now we have confirmation that frequent collaborator Bill Murray and Murder She Wrote legend Angela Lansbury will also be a part of the ensemble.? Hit the jump for more.

wes-anderson-the-grand-budapest-hotelMurray confirmed to Vulture that he was gearing up to head to Germany to shoot Anderson?s new film, and Lansbury told the UK Magazine The Gentle Woman (via The Film Stage) that she?ll be playing ?a woman of mystery? in what she calls a miniscule role. ?The actress adds that she?ll be on screen ?for probably less than 5 minutes,? though I assume the role will be of the pivotal nature. ?Plot details are still nonexistent, but Anderson yet again looks to be putting together one killer cast.

Of the names previously mentioned, only Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody and Willem Dafoe have yet to officially sign on.? It remains to be seen if they can work the film into their schedules, but I?d love to see Goldblum play around in the Wes Anderson universe.? Production on The Grand Budapest Hotel is set to begin soon for a probable 2013 release date.

SIth Empire Meeting Displays its Vitality and Unity ? SWRP Galactic ...

Reporters of Galactic News were invited to the Sith Empire meeting in Byss.

The Imperial throne room of Byss was full of dignitaries and supporters of the Sith Empire to listen the Emperor Destius or address him their concern. He started the meeting by talking about the settlement of the Obsidian Dominion in the nearby planet of Kalist 6 and said he was looking forward ?a new era of alliance and solidarity?. Then he announced the successful negotiation with Lady Darr tha Sundew, leading to the joining of Lehon to the Sith Empire. He claimed more worlds shall rally their banners and the Sith Order shall to educate, empower and protect through the Galaxy.

Sith Empire Meeting

After this announcements, Darth Nessa had the floor and surrendered the Emperor her title of queen of Ziost. She felt the necessity to do so after recent events gave the impression she worshiped the Galactic Empire led by Kulith Laan, especially since she shared a connection with the Headmistress of the Trayus Academy, a key member of the Empire. In a dramatic gesture, she broke the sign of this academy and renounced to her title. Even if surprised, the Emperor understood her choice and congratulated her.

Asked on the relationship between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Empire led By Kulith Laan, Emperor Destius stated that his Empire had no dealings with the Galactic Imperials, though their actions have been watched as they made their own path. Furthermore, the Emperor commented on the faction as it was led by the Trayus which had once given support to the Sith Empire by saying first that their power base merely a trapping of power and that they will find it far harder to hold Coruscant over the long-term especially since they are already experiencing bombings and assassination attempts. He also reminded that the Galactic Empire wasn?t an empire of the Galaxy because it controlled very little territory and wasn?t a Sith Empire since it had little sway over the majority of Sith Orders.

Sith Empire Meeting

As for the Sith Empire it had proven itself over the longterm and shown that it could expand, sustain growth, and bring order as permanent solutions. He warned that if they continued on their path it would be a cataclysmic failure but had no intentions of interfering with their chosen way. As for the Sith Empire, its built a new capital, strengthened its worlds, and brought order and protection to its citizens without a marking of discontent. He further re-iterated that the Sith Empire was built on self-improvement, empowerment and strength.

For another announcements, Emperor Destius declared that the city on Byss would soon have its own name. The name of the capital city of the Sith Empire would be announced in the coming days.?In addition the Emperor has appointed Zander Varmann as the Information Minister who would make frequent scheduled announcements as to updates and responses concerning the Empire.

In a final surprising announcement, Emperor Destius stated that the former Emperor Novo was found alive and is recuperating nicely. The Sith Empire will now have two past Emperors and the present to work in harmony strengthening the regime.

Drug originally developed for cancer proves effective for children with progeria

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Results of the first-ever clinical drug trial for children with Progeria, a rare, fatal "rapid-aging" disease, demonstrate the efficacy of a farnesyltransferase inhibitor (FTI), a drug originally developed to treat cancer. The clinical trial results, completed only six years after scientists identified the cause of Progeria, included significant improvements in weight gain, bone structure and, most importantly, the cardiovascular system, according to The Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) and Boston Children's Hospital.

The study results were published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS), is a rare, fatal genetic disease characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. All children with Progeria die of the same heart disease that affects millions of normal aging adults (atherosclerosis), but instead of occurring at 60 or 70 years of age, these children may suffer heart attacks and strokes as early as age 5 years, with the average age of death at 13 years.

"To discover that some aspects of damage to the blood vessels in Progeria can not only be slowed by the FTI called lonafarnib, but even partially reversed within just 2.5 years of treatment is a tremendous breakthrough, because cardiovascular disease is the ultimate cause of death in children with Progeria," said Leslie Gordon, MD, PhD, lead author of the study, medical director for PRF, and mother of a child with Progeria. In addition, Dr. Gordon is a staff scientist at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and associate professor at Hasbro Children's Hospital and Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Results Yield Improvements in One or More Study Measures for All Children

Twenty-eight children from sixteen countries participated in the two-and-a-half year drug trial, representing 75 percent of known Progeria cases worldwide at the time the trial began. Of those, 26 are children with the classic form of Progeria. The children traveled to Boston every four months to receive comprehensive medical testing through Boston Children's Hospital's Clinical and Translational Study Unit.

Treatment consisted of the FTI lonafarnib, supplied by Merck & Co., given to children orally, twice-a-day over the course of the study, under the supervision of principal investigator Mark Kieran, MD, PhD, director of pediatric medical neuro-oncology at the Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center.

The research team, which included specialists at Boston Children's Hospital, Brigham & Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, evaluated the children's rate of weight gain compared to their pre-therapy rate as the primary outcome because children with Progeria experience severe failure to thrive, and have a consistent, very slow linear rate of weight gain over time. Researchers also examined arterial stiffness (a predictor of heart attack and stroke in the general population), bone density and rigidity (indicators of osteoporosis). Every child completing the study showed improvement in an ability to gain additional weight, increased flexibility of blood vessels or improved bone structure.

Results included improvement in one or more of the following areas:

  • Weight: One in three children demonstrated a greater than 50 percent increase in annual rate of weight gain or switched from weight loss to weight gain, due to increased muscle and bone mass.
  • Bone Structure: On average, skeletal rigidity (which was highly abnormal at trial initiation) improved to normal levels after FTI treatment.
  • Cardiovascular:Arterial stiffness, strongly associated with atherosclerosis in the general aging population, decreased by 35 percent. Vessel wall density also improved with treatment.

Following the 2003 discovery of the gene that causes Progeria, researchers identified FTIs as a potential drug treatment for Progeria. Children with Progeria have a genetic mutation that leads to the production of the protein progerin, which is responsible for Progeria. Progerin blocks normal cell function and part of its toxic effect on the body is caused by a molecule called a "farnesyl group," which attaches to the progerin protein. FTIs act by blocking the attachment of the farnesyl group onto progerin.

"In the early stages of planning for this clinical trial, we realized that my team's experience using FTIs to treat children with brain cancer could bring together PRF's preclinical research efforts and the expertise we needed to study the drug in children with Progeria," said Kieran, the study's senior author and associate professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. "The premise behind studying this drug was that by stopping the attachment of the farnesyl group onto progerin in children with Progeria, progerin may be inactivated, reducing some effects of the disease."

"PRF provides a model for disease research organizations, and is a good example of successful translational research, moving from gene discovery to clinical treatment at an unprecedented pace," added Dr. Kieran.

Since PRF's founding in 1999, the organization and its scientific partners have identified the genetic mutation that causes the disease, funded preclinical research and funded clinical trials. A second clinical trial, funded by the National Institutes of Health and PRF, is currently underway and more trials are expected to follow.

"The partnership between The Progeria Research Foundation, the research team and these courageous families was essential for success," said Dr. Gordon. "It required identifying children and their home doctors from around the globe, obtaining the essential pre-trial clinical information, transporting families to and from Boston, supplying translators both inside and outside of the hospital setting, and putting together a multidisciplinary clinical team to assess treatment effects. But it was all worth it, and I believe we have set in motion a blueprint for successful treatment trials for children with Progeria and for other rare diseases."

"The results of this study provide our family with excitement and hope for Megan's future," said Sandy Nighbor, mother of Megan, a 12-year-old child who participated in the clinical trial. "We're grateful to The Progeria Research Foundation and all of the doctors for their commitment to helping my daughter and all children with Progeria."

Progeria Linked to Normal Aging Process

Previous research shows that progerin is also produced in the general population and increases in the body with age. A number of studies successfully linked progerin with normal aging, including a causal link between progerin and genetic instability, specifically telomere dysfunction in the aging process. Researchers plan to continue researching the effect of FTIs, which may help scientists learn more about cardiovascular disease that affects millions, as well as the normal aging process.

"One of the main reasons we achieved breakthrough results in this first trial is because of the tremendous supporters who provided funding, and helped get us one step closer to achieving our ultimate goal -- a cure for Progeria," said Audrey Gordon, Executive Director of PRF. "Every donation makes a difference. With continued support, we will fund research that will not only allow children with Progeria around the world to live long and healthy lives, but may also advance our understanding of the normal aging process that affects us all."

Right Reactions: Early Retirement Plans

Come on folks, let's don't get cocky. ?The blogosphere has been circulating the following...?

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?35 Million Hawaii Estate

Are Obama insiders secretly making
retirement plans for the Obamas with
the expectation the president will lose his bid for re-election in November?

Very quietly, Obama?s chief financier, Penny Pritzker, has entered the Hawaii housing market to buy a retirement home for the president and his?family that will be available not in 2016, but in January 2013, according to a confidential source within Pritzker?s Chicago organization

Pritzker, a wealthy Chicago business executive and heiress to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, served as national finance chairman for Obama?s 2008 campaign and is the co-chairman of his 2012 effort.

The source told WND that highly confidential internal polls conducted by the Obama campaign indicate Obama cannot win re-election, despite public surveys that show him in the lead.

?The public polls are mostly political,? the source argued. ?Obama radicals want Romney supporters to feel discouraged and give up. Truth is that Romney?s winning."

Work Out in the Morning to Curb Your Appetite Later in the Day

Work Out in the Morning to Curb Your Appetite Later in the DayWork Out in the Morning to Curb Your Appetite Later in the Day It may not seem like it, but a morning workout may be the key to effectively managing your portions and curbing your appetite later in the day. One new study pointed out that a good morning workout reduces your motivation to eat, which may translate to you being less likely to hit the fridge and load up on food.

The Brigham Young University study, published in the October edition of the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, put normal-weight and overweight participants through a 45 minute exercise regimen every morning, and then showed them pictures of food, compared to people of the same weight who were shown the same pictures but didn't work out. The researchers measured their neural activity when shown the food, and participants who had exercised actually showed lower brain response than those who hadn't.

Granted, the study used a small sample size (35 women), and the 45 minutes of exercise was treadmill walking, so there's definitely plenty of research to be done here, but if the implication is that morning workouts will keep us from pigging out in front of the fridge for breakfast or overeating at lunch, it's worth a try. It feels a little counter-intuitive, that exercise might make you less hungry, but the researchers explain a bit in the video above, or hit the link below to read more about the study and methodology.

yeah and this is news why this idiot and his dingbat of a fiancee won?t be married more than 5 years as is oh so common in hollywood. think about it the last hollywood couple to make the golden anniversary mark was Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward about 8 months before he passed away 4 years ago. in case you nitwits don?t know what golden means in that context it?s 50 years of marriage. the couple mentioned above is more than just great actors they were all around wonderful people and she still is an all around wonderful person. here?s a recent photo of her at the organic reasturant he co-owned in the last years of his life with their daughter Melissa and youngest grandson Henry Lissy as family and friends call her had just sung she a trained opera singer who had taken a long Hiatus to raise her sons and has said the reasturant reminds her of her living room warm and intimate and that singing there even though her dad didn?t live to see her overcome her stage fright is comforting because his spirit is still in the place and having her mom there on most ocassions helps to.

(AP) ? The chief of world cycling's governing body is questioning why American anti-doping authorities have not yet sent him the file of evidence that prompted them to strip Lance Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and ban him for life.

International Cycling Union President Pat McQuaid on Saturday said the United States Anti-Doping Agency had not given the UCI a date to expect the details, and he sounded impatient to receive them.

"UCI assumes that USADA have the file, the full file, as they've already made a decision based on it and therefore it's difficult to understand why it hasn't arrived yet," McQuaid said from the Road Cycling World Championships in the southern Netherlands.

Armstrong has long denied doping but chose last month not to fight drug charges by USADA, which wiped out 14 years of his results. USADA believes Armstrong used banned substances as far back as 1996, including EPO, steroids and blood transfusions.

McQuaid conceded that the allegations of doping against Armstrong, a cancer survivor-turned champion who has long been the sport's biggest name, had damaged the image of cycling. But he defended his organization, saying it was at the forefront of moves to stamp out the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport.

"It's obvious any anti-doping case, whether it's a big case or a small case, is not good for cycling," McQuaid said. "The UCI has nothing to be apologetic about," he added. "UCI has always been the international federation that does the most in the fight against doping."

In a lengthy news conference, McQuaid also confirmed that the UCI is hoping to have at least one more men's and women's track cycling event added to the program at the 2016 Rio Olympics after the success of the velodrome racing at the London Games.

He also said the Spanish city of Ponferrada has been given 30 days to come up with a guarantee it can finance the 2014 Road World Championships or risk losing the event.

Henry deserves more than 1 game

Thierry Henry is a player of sublime skill, a man who has provided more than one YouTube-worthy goal. His talent is undeniable, and his value to the league cannot be in question.

But it?s becoming increasingly clear: That man has anger issues. And he needs to get it sorted out.

It shows up when he gets frustrated, like when he acted like a child during a routine post-game interview earlier this year.

He can be sneaky about it, like the beginning of last year, when Henry routinely got away with doing that little hand-on-the-face-thing, where he seems to be giving a good natured acknowledgement to an opponent ? but when he?s really giving ?em the business, slapping them harder than they expected.

And how about last October, when he was busted red-handed attempting a real bit of naughtiness against Sporting Kansas City, crashing into a fallen Roger Espinoza.

That night, Henry immediately feigned innocence, as if he didn?t see Espinoza, or as if someone with his grace, balance and athletic ability, somehow, could not avoid a player on the turf while jogging by. We all saw through that one, right? (The referee certainly did, red carding Henry rightly right after he put his knee into the back of Espinoza?s neck.)

Well, something about Sporting KC brings out the worst in Henry.

Because he just got suspended for his latest shenanigan. ?This time Kei Kamara was the victim. Henry, once again, immediately fell to the turf as if he was the injured party.

(MORE: the latest Henry suspension ? a cynic?s view)

And speaking of injury, let?s not forget two seasons back, when Henry injured FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman in an episode that was probably more about carelessness than hostility. (Here?s the video clip of that one.)

Considering his history, Henry probably should have gotten more than one game for something so needless as what happened this week against SKC.

Next time it happens, MLS really should throw the book at him. The league simply cannot have different standards for marquee players in matters of discipline.

Armed man holds hostage in Pittsburgh, while posting on Facebook

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - An armed man claiming to have a bomb was holding a hostage inside a Pittsburgh high-rise building on Friday, authorities said, and he appeared to be posting messages about his situation on Facebook.

Police were negotiating with the man who said he had a gun and a bomb in a 16th-floor office at 3 Gateway Center, Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper said in a press briefing carried on local television.

"He is not telling negotiators why he's doing this," Harper said. There have been no injuries and the hostage is believed to be the man's intended target, he added.

Police identified the man as Klein Michael Thaxton and said they speaking with him by telephone and monitoring his Facebook page.

On Facebook, a man who appeared to be Thaxton was posting messages beginning at mid-morning. He also posted what he claimed was his telephone number.

"how this ends is up to yall," said one of his Facebook message.

In another message, he wrote: "I can't take it no more."

"this life I'm livn rite now i dnt want anymore ive lost everything and i aint getting it back," said another message.

Several people responded on Facebook with messages saying they were praying for him and encouraging him to cooperate with police.

Thaxton walked into the office shortly after 8 a.m. and took one man hostage, police said, but so far has not made any demands.

"He's being very cooperative at this time," the police chief said. "He is negotiating with our negotiators." The man's mother has been taken inside the building to talk to her son, he said.

The incident was taking place in the office of a company that handles union pensions, but police said Thaxton did not appear to have any connection to the company.

On Facebook, the man believed to be Thaxton also wrote: "welln pops youll never have to worry about me again you'll nevr need to by me anything no need to ever waste ur hard earned money on me. i'll live n jail you dnt want me around anymore thats kool bye..."

The situation was contained and rest of the office building was not evacuated, Harper said. "The other floors are safe."

Police cordoned off several streets around the office building.
