Canada's economy adds 7,700 jobs

OTTAWA ? Canada?s job-creation machine slowed in May following two massive months of employment gains but it still managed to squeeze out 7,700 additional jobs ? slightly more than expected and enough to keep the unemployment rate steady.

The increase was due to the addition of self-employed, government and part-time workers, which offset a decline in full-time employment in the private sector ? possibly a sign of that Canadian businesses were cautious about adding jobs.

Economists had largely anticipated the slowdown on the labour front, given that March and April saw an eye-popping 140,000 new jobs created, a 30-year high for a two-month period.

But given that Canada?s economic growth rate slipped below two per cent in the first quarter, analysts believed such numbers were unsustainable.

The May jobs report from Statistics Canada was seen as mostly welcome news and an indication that the debt crisis and recessionary climate in Europe hadn?t spooked Canadian employers.

?I?m just relieved it wasn?t an outright decline,? said Doug Porter, Bank of Montreal?s deputy chief economist.

?It?s far from a surprise that we get a little bit of a slowdown in job creation, especially given what just happened south of the border.?

Last week, the U.S. reported only 69,000 new jobs were created in May, the third straight disappointing performance.

Regionally, Quebec experienced the most job gains during month ? 14, 700 ? and Ontario the biggest decline ? 18,700. Alberta also saw a significant increase in employment with 9,800 net new jobs, dropping the province?s unemployment rate to 4.5 per cent, along with Saskatchewan, the lowest in the country. British Columbia saw its unemployment rate jump to 7.4 per cent from 6.2, but only because there were 30,500 more people looking for jobs in the province in May.

Porter said there was reason to cheer that Canada?s manufacturing sector posted a 36,400 jobs pick-up in May, and annualized growth rate for wages rose to three per cent from 2.3 per cent.

Scotiabank?s Derek Holt noted that the factory gain was the sixth consecutive monthly increase and lifted the jobs expansion in the Canada?s hard-pressed manufacturing sector to 3.3 per cent from last year.

Still there were several underlying weaknesses in the Statistics Canada report.

The main negative was that there were 15,600 fewer employees last month than in April, and the private sector shed 22,500 workers. As well, the number of new part-time workers outnumbered full-time by four to one.

Those numbers were mitigated by a rise of 23,300 in the self-employment category, which is usually a sign of labour market weakness. As well, government hiring rose by 6,900.

Looking down the road, news that Canada?s trade performance returned to negative with a $367 million deficit in April, following five months of surpluses, gives some evidence to the Bank of Canada?s view that trade will be a weak contributor to the economy this year.

Analysts said the data will likely have no effect on the Bank of Canada?s thinking over interest rates. The central bank is likely to stay on hold for some time, the said, given the uncertainty about how events in Europe will unfold.

May?s numbers brought job creation over the past 12 months to 203,000, consistent with an economy that is growing but modestly. Almost all have been full time.

Besides the big gain in manufacturing, Statistics Canada said employment in education services also increased, by 25,700, and there were 10,700 more workers in the agriculture sector.

Offsetting the gains, construction shed 27,000 workers and employment in information, culture and recreation fell by 27,300.

Annan blames Syria for peace plan failure

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? International envoy Kofi Annan warned Thursday that Syria is drifting toward full-blown civil war and blamed the failure of his peace plan primarily on President Bashar Assad's government. He urged the divided U.N. Security Council to threaten "consequences" if Assad doesn't stop the violence.

Increasingly impatient with the Syrian regime, Annan confirmed for the first time that his six-point plan is not being implemented. He said it's now time for the U.N.'s most powerful body and the wider international community to step up the pressure to ensure its implementation or start discussing other options to stop the bloodshed.

Annan spoke amid dire signs that diplomatic efforts to end the conflict are failing: U.N. observers came under fire Thursday as they tried to reach the site of the latest reported mass killing in Syria ? about 80 people, including women and children who were shot or stabbed.

Adding to concern about the unarmed observers, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council that U.N. patrols in Syria have been regularly obstructed and in some cases deliberately targeted, citing examples where a heavy weapon, armor-piercing ammunition, and a surveillance drone were used, a senior U.N. official said.

Annan, the joint U.N.-Arab League envoy, urged the Security Council to make clear that there will be "consequences" ? usually code for sanctions ? if his peace plan is not fully implemented.

"Clearly, the time has come to determine what more can be done to secure implementation of the plan," Annan said. "We must also chart a clearer course for a peaceful transition, if we are to help the government and opposition, as well as Syrian society, to help resolve the crisis."

In a sign of increasing global concern at the escalating Syrian conflict, Annan, Ban and Arab League Secretary-General Nabil ElAraby addressed an open meeting of the U.N. General Assembly in the morning and spent three hours behind closed doors with the Security Council in the afternoon discussing how to get the Syrian government to implement the Annan plan.

"The three of us agree: Syria can quickly go from a tipping point to a breaking point," Ban said. "The danger of a full-scale civil war is imminent and real, with catastrophic consequences for Syria and the region."

The message from Arab nations is that the U.N.'s most powerful body should impose nonmilitary sanctions against Syria, which has been suspended from the organization, he said.

The U.S. and its European allies have tried unsuccessfully for months to threaten sanctions against Syria as the death toll has risen. But Russia and China, Syria's main allies, vetoed two Security Council resolutions that threatened possible sanctions, and they indicated their continuing opposition in a joint statement after a summit in Beijing on Wednesday. The statement also opposed any outside military interference or forceful imposition of "regime change" in Syria.

Nonetheless, Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said it was time to try to adopt a new U.N. resolution "with clear time lines for sanctions in the event of non-compliance."

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters that the Syrian government hasn't complied with all provisions in the Annan plan but there have been "encouraging developments" including an agreement to allow in humanitarian agencies. He accused the armed opposition of not only failing to comply with the Annan plan but declaring their intention not to do so, which he called "a very dangerous development."

In another diplomatic move, Annan said preliminary discussions are taking place about establishing a "contact group" comprising countries that could influence both sides in the Syrian conflict to end the violence. The group would likely comprise world and regional powers, including Iran.

"If they could come together and look at the problems in a coldly realistic manner ... and say let's cooperate and suggest a roadmap for the Syrians to consider and work really to steer everybody in the same direction ... we may make progress," Annan said.

Annan said Iran is an important country and expressed hope it will be "part of the solution." U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice called Iran "part of the problem" because it is supports the government's campaign of violence and hasn't demonstrated it's ready "to contribute to the solution."

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has proposed holding an international conference that would attract all countries that can influence Syria. Churkin, Russia's U.N. envoy, said the proposal "is very much in line" with Annan's idea of a contact group.

Annan said the international community had united behind his peace plan "but it now must take that unity to a new level" and "act as one."

Otherwise, he said, Syria will likely face a future of "brutal repression, massacres, sectarian violence, and even all-out civil war."

After months of acrimonious debate and finger-pointing, the Annan plan was the first international measure that won support from Russia and China as well as the U.S. and Europe. But in the West, there is growing dismay at its unraveling, and the potential for a spillover across the region.

Annan stressed that "individual actions or interventions will not resolve the crisis" ? an apparent reference to opposition fighters and the countries providing them with arms and financial support.

"If we genuinely unite behind one process, and act and speak with one voice, I believe it is still possible to avert the worst and enable Syria to emerge from this crisis," he said.

In his briefing to the General Assembly, Annan said he told Assad nine days ago in Damascus that he wasn't implementing the peace plan and strongly urged him "to take bold and visible steps to now radically change his military posture."

Annan said Assad called militants the main obstacle, but he told diplomats that while all parties must cease violence, "the first responsibility lies with the government."

Since his visit, Annan said "shelling of cities has intensified, government-backed militia seem to have free rein with appalling consequences ... and president Assad has not indicated a change of course."

Syria's U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari insisted, however, that "the government of Syria has spared no efforts to implement its part of the Kofi Annan plan." He said an unjustifiable massacre is taking place in his country but insisted the government is not responsible.

The violence in Syria has grown increasingly chaotic in recent months, and it is difficult to assign blame for much of the bloodshed. The government restricts journalists from moving freely, making it nearly impossible to independently verify accounts from either side. The opposition blames government forces and militias that support them, known as shabihas, while the government blames rebels and "armed terrorist groups."

At the start of the General Assembly meeting, assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser asked the 193-member world body to observe a minute of silence for Syrians killed in the latest massacres.

Annan expressed "horror and condemnation" at the new massacre and demanded that the perpetrators be held accountable saying: "We cannot allow mass killing to become part of everyday reality in Syria."

Calling reports of another massacre "shocking and sickening," Ban said "each day seems to bring new additions to the grim catalog of atrocities."

He said it has been evident for many months that Assad and his government "have lost all legitimacy," adding that "any regime or leader that tolerates such killing of innocents has lost its fundamental humanity."

The U.N. chief backed Annan's call for unity, saying the international community must recognize that the inability of the government or opposition to engage in political dialogue "makes the prognosis extremely grave."

A Brief History of The Music Industry - MTT Open - Music Think Tank

?

?An excerpt from www.awfullygoodmusic.com/learn Awfully Good Music | London, UK

This blog looks at the history of the music industry, where the business of music started, how the three main parts of the industry evolved, and how we have got to the industry we know today.

Hopefully, by the end of the blog you will know the differences between the live, publishing and recording industries as well as how they came to be.

Part 1: The Live Music Industry

So, firstly,?the Live Music industry?has always existed so long as there have been gatherings of people to watch musicians perform in exchange for money or value. Being a musician and delivering music to listeners, for hundreds of years have been one and the same.

?

Part 2: The Music Publishing Industry

Since the 1600s when Gutenburg (gootenberg) invented the basic printing press for use by the Church, liturgical chant has been reproduced in paper form. But it was only in the 1800?s that the industrial revolution paved the way for a more structured delivery of music to a wider audience.

It was at this time that the publishing industries ? Book making, news reporting, print media ? were developing economies of scale enabling them to deliver products to a much wider audience, and the production of print music (or sheet music) was no exception.

With venues of the time, including stately homes, theatres and concert halls demanding the latest compositions to give to their in-house orchestras for their audience to enjoy, Classical music, from Baroque to the late 1800s romantic, took the lead with the delivery of sheet music; mainly because there was money behind this style which was enjoyed by aristocracy, leaving folk music trailing behind and being delivered more by word-of-mouth. Religious music had always propagated through Monks and Priests educated enough to transcribe their music and hymns, but this was not a commercial industry as developed in the industrial revolution.

When many different orchestras were able to play the compositions of few composers as a result of sheet music distributed to them,?the music publishing industry?was created.By the late 1800s, composers could write works that would be sold on paper to hundreds of localised orchestras and the printing industry was thriving.

Part 3: The Recorded Music Industry

In 1857 Leon Scott made his first audio analysis tool that could record on a piece of paper the audio input it received. This lead to Thomas Edison, in 1877 to go one step further; a machine called a phonograph that could both record and play back audio instantly using a thin metal cylinder.

Through the 1880s to 1900s a format war was had involving cylinders of tin, wax, celluloid, and disks of 4 inches, 5inches, 7 ? inches 10inches and by 1903 the 12 inch record, made from shellac, a resin from the female lac bug of India. By this stage the 78 revolutions per minute shellac disks were able to take around 4 ? minutes of music recorded through ribbon microphones.

The ability to record a particular band performing a particular composition using the sheet music for it, created?the recorded music industry.

This recorded music industry put much more focus on the musicians themselves, and away from the composers. The process by which musicians were being recorded became more sophisticated, until Les Paul, in 1948, recorded the first sound-on-sound overdubbed, or multi-track recording, with a ?track called ?Lover (When You?re Near Me)?. This example showed that recordings no longer needed to be taken live (where all musicians were in the same room playing together) and this opened up further opportunities in artistic license through records including Paul?s tape delay, phaser and delay effects.

Record labels, who brought together the composers from the publishing industry and the musicians from the live industry and created a vinyl for the recording industry, would employ people to find the upcoming talent: to put the right musican with the right song in the right studio with the right producer or sound engineer and to release the record at the right time. These people became known as Artist & Repertoire Representatives (or A&R reps). Who went on to pick and choose the successful artists we see today.

Part 4: The Music Industry forming, 1960

The second world war had vastly improved communication technology and shown many people that the world was smaller than they thought, with the first suggestion of a global community. Improvements from morse code where a sound synthesiser was needed to produce the tone were adapted by musicians to create the first polyphonic synthesisers attached to a keyboard to create surreal and out of this world sounds on the multi-track recordings while Les Paul, already credited with inventing multi-track recording, had been frustrated with the lack of sound coming from his guitar while playing live, invented the single-coil solid body guitar, the first commercial electric guitar.

All of these industry advancements fell into place through the 1960s when Elvis Presley, his UK counterpart Cliff Richard and then The Beatles all capitalised on them. Elvis was the epitome of musician-focused international audience delivered through record sales and promoted through live performance. Cliff Richard developed a similar trait in the UK market and The Beatles brought together their own songwriting, with their performances, massive international record sales and expansive promotional live performance touring. The Beatles marked the first mega-band to write and perform their own songs, showing it was a viable business model:

Having caught the attention of some wealthy people who noticed the record sale levels, the recording industry began to receive much larger investments, enabling elaborate stage shows for promotion, manufacture of large volumes of records that were distributed worldwide and lucrative recording contracts with talented artists.

Merchandising prospered through live events as an alternative income stream and for many years this continued as a successful strategy. More artists, more labels, better deals, better distribution.

Part 5: Technological Improvements

Various new recorded music formats were introduced; compact tape cassettes in the mid 1970s, a transitional medium from vinyl long-playing (LP) records through to compact disks in the 1990s and while this was happening, the technological industries were advancing digital microcomputers enabling personal computers to become widely available to the public.

A new concept known as the internet, designed as a Cold-War failsafe for national government communication became publicly available in 1990 when Tim Berners-Lee invented the WorldWideWeb web browser. Commercial use was not allowed until 1995 when Amazon and eBay were established. As the internet had been restricted commercially for 5 years, many had discovered the internet?s potential as an information and file sharing network and public perception began to accept a shift to digital storage of information not just on local area networks seen through 1980?s corporations but on a personal level.

This marked the removal of geographical restriction on distribution of recorded music: you did not need to go to your local store to collect your favourite record any more but online stores were simply inadequate ? having been restricted 5 years.

John Fanning, Shaun Fanning and Sean Parker released Napster in 1999. It focused on organising all the music (mainly in .mp3 format) into one portal where the public could search for the track they wanted and list the tracks they had. This is the point at which intellectual property ownership became the most valuable asset of the recorded music industry and where the lines between publishing and recording industries were further blurred as there was no longer a tangible product to distinguish the two.

Now there was an unregulated collection of recorded music which rendered the sales of physical recordings useless for those that just wanted the recording and not a physical product they could keep.

?Why should I pay for an overpriced album where most of the money does not go to the artist when I can just go online, type its track name in and get it for free?? Was the mindset.

Part 6: The reformation of the music industry

In 2001 CD album sales peaked in line with the?.com?bubble bursting; they have not stopped declining. The recorded music industry has been in panic, trying to hold onto the pre-internet strategy of album sales through their controlled stock.

The internet does not have the intellectual property right laws ? in particular international legislation ? for them to be able to control the market any more. This has lead to attempts by recording companies to improve intellectual property laws through case law precedents by taking individuals to court in high profile cases.

This had a knock-on effect on the publishing industry who provided the songs to a now ever-decreasing value market, and to the live industry, who no longer received such lavish budgets for touring due to a lack of return on investment.

Part 7: The Future

These industries are sorting themselves out. The musc industry as a whole is the largest it has ever been. It is just changing its route to market and income streams.

Before the money was in recorded music sales which propped up live performance and publishing.

Currently, the money is still in recorded music sales, but it is declining rapidly, and future-conscious industry professionals are seeing a need to move to live performance and publishing/synchronisation and endorsements taking the lead with recorded music sales yet to reach their market equilibrium ? but which is lower than it currently is. It is reasonable to see recorded music sales transferring online, but the eCommerce is not matured enough yet to provide a viable easy-to-use store. iTunes by Apple is leading the way for online media eCommerce and that market equilibrium for recorded music sales will be proportional to the technology improvements for years to come.

Food for thought

One market that does not have the history of the strong recorded music industry, but does have the internet piracy is the Chinese market. Lessons can be learnt from studying how they have adapted the music industry (or rather, converged heavily with other media industries) so that there is some sustainable income. The most common method is through product endorsements, but other methods might provide insight into the direction the western markets could take.

Review

In summary there are 3 main parts to the music industry: Live, Publishing and Recorded. They have changed dramatically over their 150 year life and most of that change has happened in the last 15 years.

This chat hasn?t covered convergence of media, support services to the industry or many pioneers in the music industry, as well as different job roles available, or step by step guides to becoming a musician in todays industry, all of which are covered in more detail on the blog section of AwfullyGoodMusic.com

I hope you found this useful so you can crack on and don?t forget to let people you think will benefit know about it!

The Importance of Outsourcing Your Fulfillment Needs

10:03 am International Business News

Many businesses have turned to fulfillment solutions as way to organize their business, increase profit or as a means to expand their business. They find that using this type of service saves them time and money and helps them do things more efficiently. Hence, this is a crucial part of running their business and a worthwhile endeavor for any business. However, it is crucial that a business that wants to outsource their fulfillment take their time and carefully assess their needs and the reputation of the provider.

A fulfillment company benefits a company in many ways. They may configure your products in a way that ensures smooth delivery to your customer and make sure customers receive exactly what they ordered in a timely manner. A top notched fulfillment center will configure every aspect of the products from assembling to labeling in the warehouse with attention to quality and efficiency.

Using a fulfillment center provides many benefit no matter whether you own a small or a medium size company. The company will have increase storage space and can use the space for other purposes rather than storing inventory. You also have better inventory management because the fulfillment company can do an inventory analysis and advise you of the products that move quickly and advise you of those that do not move as rapidly. This is critical information because you know what products require more focus to increase sales and which ones to discontinue.

Any time a company ships products locally or long distance, they ran the risk that some form of damage may occur or the product may become lost. However, when you outsource your fulfillment, you minimize lost and damage because these companies have the tools and materials to ensure a safe and secure transport.

Outsourcing your fulfillment affords you the opportunity to handle other aspects of the business as well such as marketing or perhaps give you more free time to spend with your family.

A final benefit you get from outsourcing your fulfillment needs is reduce cost because you decrease some of the labor overhead and you can use those employees in other areas.

Outsourcing your fulfillment needs is a viable option for any company regardless of the size and will help your business concentrate on growing the business. Thus, this is an option worth exploring for your business today.
