A total of 162 regular-season games weren?t enough to decide the second wild-card team in the American League as the Tampa Bay Rays will visit Texas on Monday night to decide which team then gets to play at Cleveland. The winner of that one-game playoff then faces Boston in the AL Division Series. Texas is a -115 favorite for this one on WagerWeb.
The Indians are in. They claimed the first Wild Card spot Sunday afternoon by beating the Twins, 5-1. Cleveland won 10 straight and 15 of its final 17 games to storm into the postseason for the first time since 2007.
The Rangers beat the Angels, 6-2, on Sunday, scoring four runs from the sixth through the eighth to break a 2-2 tie in what turned out to be a win-or-go-home affair in Texas. Tampa Bay beat Toronto 7-6 after losing the first two games to the Jays.
Tampa Bay starts David Price (9-8, 3.39) on Monday. Price comes into Monday?s matchup sporting a 2.73 ERA in his last four starts, but he?s facing a squad he has been anything but dominant against throughout his career. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner is 1-4 with a 5.98 ERA in eight starts career starts against Texas ? including a 10.26 mark in four starts in Arlington. Price also has dropped all three of his postseason starts against the Rangers, two during the 2010 AL Division Series and the other in the 2011 ALDS.
Price likely will have to deal with Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, who will return to the Rangers roster on Monday after serving his 50-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball?s Basic Agreement and its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment program. The Rangers did not say Sunday whether Cruz will be in the starting lineup.
He will go against Martin Perez. The 22-year-old rookie is 7-2 with a 3.26 ERA in his past 10 starts. Alexi Ogando and Matt Garza will be available out of the ?pen to back Perez.
WagerWeb trends: Over is 3-0-1 in the last 4 meetings. Under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings in Texas. Under is 5-2 in Prices last 7 starts vs. Rangers. Rays are 2-5 in Prices last 7 starts vs. Rangers.
