Hands on with the new TomTom for Android satellite navigation app

TomTom for Android has been an awfully long time coming. Having been available on iOS now for a number of years, the global satellite navigation giant has been somewhat tardy in bringing it to Android. But, it's officially official now, we're getting it on Android in October. The biggest question still remains the same though -- why buy this on an OS that comes with a perfectly good satellite navigation system built in for free? We went hands on at IFA 2012 in Berlin to see if maybe we could answer that. 

First things first, TomTom is a really nice looking application. The interface is well designed -- and by that we mean it's designed as if this were a stand alone TomTom device. One of the not so great points about Google Maps Navigation is that the in app menus are still designed like a smartphone app. TomTom has some really large, bold icons that make for simple use in the car. 

All the necessary information is present too, speed, distance to destination, arrival time as you would expect from an app such as this. Also available is HD traffic, which during the demonstration showed just how bad an idea driving in Berlin in the afternoon can be. Speed camera locations are also available in TomTom -- not that anyone at AC speeds anywhere, ever -- and the locations are community built. For example, if you drive past a location not registered and you come across a mobile speed camera, by tapping the relevant icon you can report this information back for inclusion in the database. 

The demo unit also shows the universal TomTom docking system in action. This is perfect for use with an Android smartphone, as it has adjustable arms to suit the differing sizes of devices. It also has a microUSB charging facility so there's still only need to have one device plugged into the cigarette lighter socker. 

We're going to have to wait until October though to really get to grips with TomTom for Android. No matter how good it may look on a show floor, real world performance is what matters here. There are definitely features in TomTom which is going to make it justifiable for regular drivers over something like Google Maps Navigation, but price is going to play a big part in that decision. 

And as yet, we still don't know that price. TomTom informed us that the pricing information will be announced at launch, but that it will be available in Google Play in markets around the world sometime in October. It does feel like a full on TomTom navigation system though, and with an application available for a smartphone, it makes you wonder how long the stand alone systems will continue to sell. Should Rivals Run SCARED From the iPad Mini?

An inexpensive iPad Mini will help Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) stir up the 7-inch tablet market completely and force rivals to change strategies, an analyst has said. IHS iSuppli analyst Rhoda Alexander said Apple could go as aggressive as?$249?for an entry-level model of the rumored new tablet.

Apple?s overall approach to the device will depend on whether the company wants to ?crush the opposition? or just maintain dominance, Alexander told CNET. ?And the price point would be how they do that,? she said.

While a $299 price tag would be a better fit for profit, the company could go as low as?$249?if it really decides to pressure the market. A higher-end model with 4G LTE would be closer to $349, Alexander said. The analyst added rivals including Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) will need to start resorting to strategies like the latter?s promotional campaign for the Nexus 7 tablet, which places an advertisement for the device on its ultra-popular search home page. Driving more sales before the iPad Mini arrives is the smart way to go, the analyst said.

?The input I?m getting from the supply side is that [Google] has actually raised the quantity of orders being built this year,? Alexander said. ?We see it on the order of five to six million in 2012 or maybe even a little more than six million.?

However, the Wi-Fi-only Nexus 7 may not do as well in international markets where 3G is necessary, according to Alexander, while a cheaper 3G- or 4G-capable iPad would possibly thrive.

Vitamin B3 may offer new tool in fight against 'superbugs'

A new study suggests that nicotinamide, more commonly known as vitamin B3, may be able to combat some of the antibiotic-resistance staph infections that are increasingly common around the world, have killed thousands and can pose a significant threat to public health.

The research found that high doses of this vitamin increased by 1,000 times the ability of immune cells to kill staph bacteria. The work was done both in laboratory animals and with human blood.

The findings were published today in the Journal of Clinical Investigation by researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, UCLA, and other institutions. The research was supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health.

The work may offer a new avenue of attack against the growing number of "superbugs."

"This is potentially very significant, although we still need to do human studies," said Adrian Gombart, an associate professor in OSU's Linus Pauling Institute. "Antibiotics are wonder drugs, but they face increasing problems with resistance by various types of bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus.

"This could give us a new way to treat staph infections that can be deadly, and might be used in combination with current antibiotics," Gombart said. "It's a way to tap into the power of the innate immune system and stimulate it to provide a more powerful and natural immune response."

The scientists found that clinical doses of nicotinamide increased the numbers and efficacy of "neutrophils," a specialized type of white blood cell that can kill and eat harmful bacteria.

The nicotinamide was given at megadose, or therapeutic levels, far beyond what any normal diet would provide - but nonetheless in amounts that have already been used safely in humans, as a drug, for other medical purposes.

However, there is no evidence yet that normal diets or conventional-strength supplements of vitamin B3 would have any beneficial effect in preventing or treating bacterial infection, Gombart said, and people should not start taking high doses of the vitamin.

Gombart has been studying some of these issues for more than a decade, and discovered 10 years ago a human genetic mutation that makes people more vulnerable to bacterial infections. In continued work on the genetic underpinnings of this problem, researchers found that nicotinamide had the ability to "turn on" certain antimicrobial genes that greatly increase the ability of immune cells to kill bacteria.

One of the most common and serious of the staph infections, called methicillin-resistant S. aureus, or MRSA, was part of this study. It can cause serious and life-threatening illness, and researchers say the widespread use of antibiotics has helped increase the emergence and spread of this bacterial pathogen.

Dr. George Liu, an infectious disease expert at Cedars-Sinai and co-senior author on the study, said that "this vitamin is surprisingly effective in fighting off and protecting against one of today's most concerning public health threats." Such approaches could help reduce dependence on antibiotics, he said.

Co-first authors Pierre Kyme and Nils Thoennissen found that when used in human blood, clinical doses of vitamin B3 appeared to wipe out the staph infection in only a few hours.

Serious staph infections, such as those caused by MRSA, are increasingly prevalent in hospitals and nursing homes, but are also on the rise in prisons, the military, among athletes, and in other settings where many people come into close contact.

I?m asking three questions of some of leaders in the field of social media marketing and this is what I learned. This is the fifth in the series (see the links below for earlier posts in the series).

Today: Aaron Strout, Group director at WCG?(a strategic communications counseling firm) a member of the advisory board at Vintank?(a company that offers software to connect wine industry with its customers in social spheres) and co-author of Location Based Marketing For Dummies:

Clearly connecting business objectives to actions in social, is what separates a successful social marketer, says Aaron Strout.

Like every activity in Guyana, the sport of Horseracing, although seemingly on the rise, has its fair share of problems. In fact according to some ?old timers? the sports is rapidly on the decline and probably in its worst state ever and most of that blame can be attributed to the sloth and non cooperation of the government especially the Ministry of Sports.

Recently two of Guyana?s leading brains and veteran horseracing personalities Senior Council Marcel Crawford and retired Chancellor of the Judiciary Cecil?Kennard have both blasted the Government for its non-support in?the horseracing fraternity, especially with the Government non-response to the passage of the Horseracing legislation.
Kennard, who is chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Guyana Horseracing authority,?stated that he does not want to be in charge of Horseracing at this time, but more involved in an advisory capacity, but the way things are going he is forced to assist.? He feels that since he has taken over at the helm things have improved.? But feels more ought to be done.
He is blaming the lack of adequate legislation as the main nuisance for the sports still not being properly administered.? Things are not to the level as it ought to be and people are still doing what they feel like, and we cannot nail them because there is no legislation he opined.
Kennard is unsure why the Government has not acted on the draft document which was handed to the Minister of Sport a long time ago, saying that its non-implementation remains the biggest concern of the IMC.
He said that he is willing at any time to lead a delegation to have an urgent meeting with the Minister of Sports to sort any hindrances. He however hopes to meet the minister soon.
The former Judge said that since the establishment of the IMC a number of things have been done including the establishment of a number of committees to help with the smooth running of the sport. He is optimistic that something will be done sooner than later.
Senior Council Marcel Crawford was more candid. Crawford is very disappointed with what passes as horseracing nowadays. He feels that things are done in a haphazard way, with plenty of indiscipline and too much greed. ?Persons do not have any concerns for the horses; they are only interested in making a profit. There are also too much doping of horses and illegal betting. The horses are doped in the open in front of everyone, even on the track.? ?He opined that persons should be charged for doping the animals, because it?s cruelty.
He feels that a lot more needs to be done if the sport is to get back to the glory days of Durban Park and in line with other Caribbean countries; this country he said is woefully behind.
His major disappointment is with the Government in that the Horseracing legislation has not been passed as yet.? He stated that he personally drafted the document and it was given to the minister of Culture Youth and Sports Dr Frank Anthony a long time ago, and since then nothing has been done. The minister he noted had given a commitment to have it tabled in Parliament.
He said that, ?For things to get better the government must come on board and work with the GHRA, they? must give concessions and? pass the legislation, which will help to regularize the sport.?
Mr. Crawford opined that Guyana can once again be the centre of Horseracing in the Caribbean, but the Government must assist, ?They cannot play this lay back game.?
He is disappointed that the Government is sitting on its hands in terms of passing the necessary legislations. ?In any country where sports are dominant the Governments play a leading role in assisting. They do not control, but assist.?? According to popular opinion, taking in the last Olympics, several small Caribbean countries did extremely well, because they spend money and have a properly organised system, but in Guyana its? only talk and politics.
Crawford also feels that there is need for a proper constituted GHRA which should lay down rules and stick to them stringently. Guyana should also have its own rules and not use other countries rules. He however said that the rules can be in line or patterned after other countries in the Caribbean.
The tracks should always be in order if that is not so the horses will not give of their best. Mr. Crawford will be even more drastic and close most of the tracks and race at one venue, this he said will control the sport. He cited Trinidad which has only one race track.
One important ingredient missing in horseracing in Guyana is the stud book. The establishment of a Stud Book with supporting records is a necessary prerequisite for affiliation to the Jockey Club of UK and other countries. ?Without a stud book our horses cannot race out of Guyana,? he affirmed.
Crawford stated that in days gone by, Guyana was the leading country when it came to Horseracing stating that persons from the Caribbean and South American use to come to Guyana and purchase horses and racehorses. Guyanese horses also used to go to other countries and win.
He said that, ?Some of the persons coming into the sport are not interested in learning to do things properly and if there are no rules things will not be done properly.?
To be involved in horse racing takes a lot of money and the cost has gone up astronomically the men emphasized.? They love horseracing and will do their bit to help it get back to previous years.? But first the government must help to pass the legislation.

Paralympics: Harmful "boosting" casts shadow before Games

LONDON (Reuters) - The Paralympics begin in London next week and despite the euphoria from the Olympics, the buildup to the disabled Games has been blighted by tales of deliberate "performance enhancing" injuries.

The practice of "boosting", where wheelchair-bound athletes hurt themselves to increase blood pressure and endurance, is banned by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) but is surprisingly common.

A survey of athletes at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics showed around 17 percent had used boosting.

Able-bodied athletes naturally increase blood pressure through certain exercise and can therefore push themselves harder but those with spinal injuries cannot do so easily.

One way of increasing blood pressure is to injure yourself with common ways of boosting including breaking toes, letting your bladder overfill, sitting on sharp objects, wearing overly tight leg wear or even trapping the scrotum.

British media outlets have suddenly cottoned on to the practice with widespread reports this week but the IPC and London organizers LOCOG will try to root out any cheats.

"There is testing (for boosting). Our medical team work with the IPC over testing," a LOCOG spokeswoman said.

Checks for boosting, which is considered dangerous by doctors as it can induce strokes or intracranial hemorrhage and death, include blood pressure tests and monitoring for tell-tale signs such as skin blotches.

However, doctors in the Beijing survey acknowledged that "it is possible that some athletes could have induced boosting during the competition and circumvented the initial screening process. This is difficult to monitor and poses a real challenge to the procedures for monitoring boosting in these athletes".

Boosting, known medically as the intentional induction of autonomic dysreflexia, has been compared to doping in Paralympic circles.

"ParalympicsGB have included education about (boosting) for all our athletes and we do not perceive this to be an issue with any British athletes," the British Paralympics Association told Reuters.

The Paralympics in London run from Wednesday to Sept 9.

There's nothing like a pair of red-blue glasses to add some perspective to a cosmic scene like the Curiosity rover's surroundings on Mars. Now that the rover has left its mark on the reddish Martian gravel, these 3-D views give you a better idea what it'd be like to walk in Curiosity's footsteps ... er, wheel tracks.

The red-blue views were created by British educator-astronomer Stuart Atkinson. He's one of those people who have a knack for doing mighty things with NASA imagery, sometimes even before NASA gets the chance to do likewise. You'll find plenty of those people hanging out at UnmannedSpaceflight.com ??but Atkinson also maintains his own visual gardens of delight, including The Road to Endeavour for imagery from the Opportunity rover, and The Gale Gazette for Curiosity's pictures.

Not all of Atkinson's pictures are served up in 3-D, but these are two gems from today's haul that take advantage of Curiosity's capability for stereo imagery. The six-wheeled rover has 17 onboard cameras, and 14 of them are grouped in pairs. That includes the two Mastcam cameras, which come in wide-angle and telephoto; the four navigation cameras, which come in two pairs, left and right; and the eight hazard avoidance cameras, which are doubled up on the left and right, front and rear.

When the left and right images from any of those camera systems are put together in just the right way, the result is a 3-D image that the Curiosity team's drivers and scientists can use to plot the rover's future course. Today, project scientist Joy Crisp said it was even possible to set up a long-range, high-resolution 3-D picture by snapping one picture with the telephoto Mastcam, then moving the rover just enough to snap the other image for the stereo view. Apollo moonwalkers used a similar strategy called the "stereo cha-cha" to snap most of the 3-D pictures that were taken on the moon: The photographer took one picture while putting his weight on the left leg, then shifted his weight over to the right leg and snapped the second picture.

Once Curiosity is fully up and running, it'll be able to send back HD stereo frames for 3-D movies from Mars. When Curiosity starts its climb up the 3-mile-high mountain known as Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp, we could be in for some impressive stereo views of the Martian landscape. But it'll be a while before we get those 3-D thrills. For the next couple of months, Curiosity's course is expected to be pretty two-dimensional ? and that's the way the mission managers like it.

"We should have smooth sailing ahead of us," lead rover driver Matt Heverly said today.

No science behind Akin rape pregnancy claim

(Reuters) - The long-discredited notion that rape victims cannot become pregnant - a claim that pushed Republicans to repudiate one of their own U.S. Senate candidates on Monday - dates back centuries to when human reproduction was hardly understood.

But the medieval theory has surfaced in 21st century political discourse as a result of the U.S. abortion wars.

Writers from the Middle Ages and modern politicians alike have based their arguments on the idea that a trauma of the magnitude of rape can shut down the body's reproductive system.

The combination of misunderstanding and cherry-picked science even led some to conclude that a woman who says she was raped yet becomes pregnant must have been lying about the attack. Modern proponents of the claim repeat it despite empirical research showing that rape victims are at least as likely to become pregnant as women who have consensual sex, and possibly more likely.

Representative Todd Akin, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Missouri, spurred new outrage on the subject when he told a St. Louis television station he does not support abortion for rape victims because "if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Akin, a member of the House science committee, apologized on Monday for his statement, calling it "ill conceived" and "wrong." Senior Republicans scrambled to distance themselves from the comments a week before the party holds its presidential nominating convention in Florida.

The claim that rape is unlikely to lead to a pregnancy has "no biological plausibility," said Dr. Barbara Levy, vice president for health policy at the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The claim is "not grounded in any physiology or scientifically valid data."

Akin is not alone in his view about rape and pregnancy, however. It dates at least to medieval times, when a 13th century English legal tome called Fleta asserted that pregnancy was prima facie evidence against a charge of rape, "for without a woman's consent she could not conceive."

A 19th century book, "Elements of Medical Jurisprudence" by Samuel Farr, said that conception is unlikely "without an excitation of lust, or the enjoyment of pleasure in the venereal act." That reflected the common notion that pregnancy requires a woman, like a man, to reach orgasm during intercourse.

Both early references were noted by The Guardian newspaper in a blog post on Monday.

In fact, "human ... female orgasm is not necessary for conception," explained a 1995 paper in the journal Animal Behaviour, one of many studies reaching the same conclusion.

THE STRESS FACTOR

In more modern times, the rape-pregnancy claim seems to have been linked to the fact that stress can decrease fertility.

"Mental stress can temporarily alter the functioning of your hypothalamus - an area of your brain that controls the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle," explains the Mayo Clinic in a publication about infertility. "Ovulation and menstruation may stop as a result."

But the stress that reduces fertility is the chronic kind that occurs over months or years, not the acute trauma of a rape.

"A woman who is raped at a vulnerable time in her menstrual cycle is as likely to conceive and retain a pregnancy as a woman who was voluntarily attempting pregnancy," said ACOG's Levy. "There's absolutely no validity to any sort of theory that the trauma related to rape - or to any thing else for that matter - would shut down ovulation that has already begun."

Physicians and researchers had long thought that conception occurs when sperm encounter an already-waiting egg. Recent research has shown that in fact sperm do the waiting, remaining in the woman's uterus or fallopian tubes until an egg is released from the ovaries.

Although the trauma of rape might impair a woman's fertility months or years later, said Levy, "you're not going to interrupt something (like the release of an egg) that's already started."

Numerous studies support that. In a 1996 study in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers surveyed 4,008 American women for three years. Among women in their prime reproductive years, 12 to 45, 5 percent of rapes resulted in pregnancy, mostly among adolescents. One-third "did not discover they were pregnant until they had already entered the second trimester," the researchers found, concluding that "rape-related pregnancy occurs with significant frequency."

It may occur with greater frequency than after consensual sex. Indeed, evolutionary psychologists - who seek to explain human behavior by imagining what actions might have helped our ancient ancestors survive and reproduce - say the reason rape has been so endemic throughout history is precisely because it often leads to pregnancy: men who commit that crime, goes the argument, were more likely to have progeny, passing along their "rape genes" to the next generation.

While the explanation for rape has been discredited, the fact that rape often leads to pregnancy has not been. In a 2003 study in the journal Human Nature, researchers found that 6.4 percent of rapes in the hundreds of women they surveyed caused pregnancy; that compares to a rate roughly half that with consensual intercourse. In Mexico, rape crisis centers have reported that some 15 percent of rapes cause pregnancy.

The rate may be high because rape victims are less likely to be using contraception at the time of the crime than are women in a relationship, who can also choose to forego sex during fertile periods in their reproductive cycle if they do not want to conceive.

Gary added: ?Some companies may have considered offering apprenticeships and then realised that their business does not have on-going workloads or staffing capacity to engage and support a new employee on a long term basis.
They could, however, have specific projects or short term contracts to be delivered where a graduate with a sector relevant degree could add real value.?

Despite the financial climate, nearly half of the companies surveyed planned to expand during 2012 and another third are cautiously optimistic about growth.
