Schleswig-Holstein Legalizes Online Gaming | Eat My Stack

The German state of Schleswig-Holstein became the first regional authority in the country to legalize online gaming this week.? Previously the whole country has followed the national policy of banning online gambling in order to protect the governmental monopoly on sports betting and lottery gaming.

The move is expected to lead to similar regulations in other German states, and comes ahead of a move by the national government to continue restrictions.? Schleswig-Holstein expects the move to be implemented from the beginning of 2012, and has announced that companies wishing to apply for licences to operate in the area will have to pay a tax of 20% on operating profits.? Betfair and Bwin (which now includes PartyGaming) have already indicated that they intend to apply for licences, and it seems likely that PokerStars will also apply, as it has a lot of customers in Germany.? Betfair and Bwin both saw their share prices rise in response to news of the legislation.

An estimated 2.2 million players in Germany already have online sports betting, casino or poker accounts with international companies, and this number is expected to rise if the activity is given legal status on licensed sites.? The national government had been planning a new German State Gambling Treaty in an effort to protect its state monopoly; it seems this will be thrown into confusion by the move.? Betfair issued a statement welcoming the news, and expressed the hope that lawful internet gambling would soon be available throughout the country.? It stated: ?Betfair is committed to participating in the online gambling market in Germany, ready and willing to pay taxes there and offer German consumers competitive, innovative and safe products.? The resolution passed today is an important and groundbreaking step on the way to an open and regulated gambling market in Germany. ?We are now hopeful that the other 15 German States will make the regulated amendments to their proposed State Treaty, in order to bring it into line with EU law.?
