Like me you work really hard right? Correction, your thinking really, really hard! You struggle to fit in work, the partner, the social life, the family, the hobby along with the 20 million plus others on the planet. To top it off you need to incorporate your 5 a day, 3 litres of water (or what ever ridiculous amount it is that they recommend), 8 hours beauty sleep and 3 exercise sessions per week. I know the health gods (who ever they are) pressure us to follow even more rules, but I?m stopping here before I get too depressed. I refer to all these things as the mental list.
If you?re like me you are lucky if you have a banana for breaky, a bit of lettuce in my BLT at lunch and the odd appearance of something green in the evening carb over load. I am a real foodie (my waste line says it all) and always will be, and I have begun to make my peace with this. However exercise is something I am just starting to master at the ripe old age of 20 something ish. I genuinely struggle to fit it in. My friends are the same. Between building our careers and homes, finding 4 or 5 spare hours a week to get down the gym is just too much of an ask.
However, I have recently started working for a fitness equipment manufacturer and it dawned on me. I don?t need to have that awkward conversation with myself twice a week. You know the one: ?you didn?t go to the gym last night? to which the other part of me generally responds ?I know but I had to work late? or ?it was Claire?s birthday? or lets be honest sometimes just plain old ?but it was cold and raining and I just couldn?t be bothered to go out?. I can actually exercise at home, yes in the comfort of my own home. Whatever time I want (not when the gym is open), I can chat to the chap, while watching Eastenders and get my exercise in (thats three ticks off the mental to do list). All I had to do was get a home treadmill.
They are a fraction of the price of a gym membership. Those dreaded gym memberships are like a bad relationship! You know the ones where you commit to an extra 6 months than what you know you should have, and if you try to break it off sooner they aren?t dropping off with out a fight!
Better yet I have recently learned that as running is a weight baring exercise, you can burn more calories than most other activities-up to 900 calories per hour to be exact. I do want to lose weight as do 79% of the UK according to Science Daily. Truth be told I also just want to be healthy. Well I?m 2 weeks in and I?ve already lost 5lb and I I have a lot more energy through out the day. An added bonus it?s ticking one point off the never ending mental check list and keeping the health gods at bay!
